The movies of Hong Kong ran into a growth spurt with versatility and subsequently achieved the unique label of “Made in Hong Kong” since the 1980s. “All too extravagant, too gratuitously wild”, American film scholar David Bordwell said. Hong Kong movies were wildly fantastic and extremely riotous, combining traditional and modern, the East and the West.

During 1979-1983, photographer Ms Lo Yuk-ying provided a photo column on Film Biweekly (later known as City Entertainment Magazine). With more than 100 pieces of artwork, she portrayed the fighting and CAN-DO spirit of a group of film makers, from stars to extras, on the stage and behind the scene in unique perspectives. The collection is now regarded as an authentic record of the Hong Kong movie industry during the early 1980s golden era, in a panoramic way.

Hong Kong movies not only represent the culture of Hong Kong, but also inspire generation after generation of young artists who are passionate about Hong Kong movies. Native“Generation Z”photographer and visual artist Ms Quist TSANG brought avant-garde creativity to her movie poster design and stage photography. Full of vitality, her artworks present the boldness and power of contemporary Hong Kong movies.

From 24 April - 23 May 2021, CreateHK presents a joint exhibition “Light in Motion: Photo Exhibition of Hong Kong Movie 2021” of these two outstanding photographers. In this exhibition, you can feel the mesmerizing lights of Hong Kong movies shining in the past, beaming at the moment which opens us to the fervent passion of Hong Kong movies.
