It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to Hong Kong Week 2026@Chengdu, the sixth edition of the signature arts and culture festival that began in Shanghai, in 2019, and has since been held in Guangzhou, Wuhan, Bangkok and, last year, Seoul.

Over the five editions, Hong Kong Week staged some 70 programmes, including live and online events, attracting more than one million arts and culture enthusiasts. This year, Hong Kong Week is taking place in Chengdu, the capital city of Sichuan, renowned for its rich arts and cultural heritage. Hong Kong and Sichuan have always shared a close and frequent relationship. Under the Hong Kong/Sichuan Co-operation Conference mechanism, both sides continue to promote exchanges across various fields, particularly in culture, arts, creative industries, and tourism, while actively supporting the creative industry development in Hong Kong and Sichuan. Sichuan is also the primary habitat of giant pandas, our national treasure, as well as the homeland of the three pairs of giant pandas gifted to Hong Kong by the Central Government over the years. The three pairs of giant pandas have become the close “family members” of Hong Kong people, bringing us laughter and joy.

Hong Kong Week 2026@Chengdu features about 60 performances and activities, spanning music, theatre, dance, film, design and more. Each event is a showcase for Hong Kong's artistic diversity and singular, East-West sensibilities, in creative collaboration with Chengdu. The Government is committed to fostering the cultural development of Hong Kong by actively promoting signature arts and cultural events and exchanges, echoing the support of the National 15th Five-Year Plan for Hong Kong to expedite its progression into an East-meets-West centre for international cultural exchange. To better align with the National 15th Five‑Year Plan, the Government is fully committed to formulating the first Hong Kong's Five‑Year Plan. It will articulate a vision for the future, define clear goals and directions, identify priority areas, and outline key initiatives, with a view to making even greater contributions to the country's high-quality development and modernisation.

Hong Kong Week was designed to strengthen creative exchanges, while showcasing Hong Kong's world-class arts and culture. I am confident that this year's festival in Chengdu, running from 4 to 20 September, will deepen arts and cultural cooperation between Hong Kong and Chengdu and throughout Sichuan. For that, I am grateful to the People's Government of Sichuan Province and the Chengdu Municipal People's Government, as well as our many partners in both Sichuan and Hong Kong, all of whom have lent their invaluable support to making Hong Kong Week 2026@Chengdu a resounding success.

Hong Kong embraces both Chinese and foreign cultures, and has been deepening our development into an East-meets-West Centre for international cultural exchange with the support from our country. We have been consolidating our position as the southern gateway to Chinese Mainland, and giving play to our active role of "bringing in" different cultures while enabling Chinese culture to "go global". Hong Kong Week is one of our significant platforms.

Hong Kong Week was first held in 2019, and has attracted a total of around 1.83 million attendees over the past five editions. At last year's Hong Kong Week in Seoul, a majority of questionnaire respondents agreed that the event enhanced their understanding of Hong Kong's culture, and a number of audiences expressed interest in visiting Hong Kong, demonstrating its long-term benefits to our tourism industry. Even more encouraging is that participating arts groups shared that the platform facilitated their expanding of international networks and enhanced their global visibility, creating possibilities for future cross-sector collaboration. This shows that Hong Kong Week not only brings our culture to the world, but also contributes sustainable momentum to the development of the sectors - its most valuable significance.

The Hong Kong Week 2026@Chengdu presents a diverse array of programmes that fully reflect our unique blend of the East and West, covering dance, Chinese and Western music, drama and film, along with exhibitions including intangible cultural heritage, Hong Kong toy culture and IP and interior design. We hope that aside from present is our finest artistic highlights to Chengdu audience, this platform will also help our arts and creative sectors network more extensively, foster the sustainable growth of local cultural industries, and inspire wider appreciation and affection for Hong Kong through its arts and culture.

In recent years, Hong Kong has been actively promoting the “mega event economy”, presenting a variety of world‑class sporting events, arts and cultural activities, concerts and large‑scale festivals throughout the year. This allows visitors to experience the vibrancy of Hong Kong at any time, realising our vision of “shaping tourism with culture and promoting culture through tourism”, whereby culture injects vitality into tourism and tourism further amplifies our culture. The flight from Chengdu to Hong Kong takes fewer than three hours. I cordially invite our friends in Chengdu to visit Hong Kong after enjoying the dazzling programmes of the Hong Kong Week. Come explore our performance venues, streets and attractions, feel for yourself the city's dynamic yet serene vibes, and embrace the extraordinary glamour of a vibrant metropolis.

“While Sichuan opera melodies linger, Hong Kong's waves echo in response.” Sichuan and Hong Kong - one is an inland province located in the western part of our country, endowed with a profound cultural heritage and occupying an important position in the overall national development; the other is a highly prosperous international metropolis connecting the Chinese Mainland with the world, perfectly blending Chinese and Western cultures. The two regions forge a path of cooperation, transcending all geographical and spatial constraints.

“Sichuan and Hong Kong are of one family.” The cooperation between Sichuan and Hong Kong emerged during the tide of the reform and opening-up era, deepened during the post-disaster reconstruction following the devastating Wenchuan earthquake, and matured with the establishment of the Hong Kong/Sichuan Co-operation Conference mechanism. Thanks to the joint efforts of both sides, the all-round cooperation in multiple fields such as economy, trade, science, technology, as well as education has become closer and achieved remarkable success.

Cultural exchange has added a unique touch of brilliance to Sichuan-Hong Kong cooperation. In recent years, “Panda Culture” has connected both sides. The Hong Kong Palace Museum welcomed the Gazing at Sanxingdui: New Archaeological Discoveries in Sichuan, Sichuan lanterns illuminated the night of Victoria Harbour, and Sichuan opera alongside Sichuan ethnic songs and dances blossomed on the stages of Hong Kong. The Yinge - Hong Kong Film Music Concert, as well as the Below the Lion Rock and Blossoming Melodies - Hong Kong Concerts, resonated through the nights of Chengdu. A Journey into the Past and Present - Hong Kong Intangible Cultural Heritage Exhibition and the Through Time and Light - Hong Kong Art Exhibition presented the magnificence and colorfulness of the Pearl of the Orient to the people of Sichuan. The fervent cultural exchanges between Sichuan and Hong Kong bear witness to the ever-deepening compatriot bonds and the strong sense of community for the Chinese nation among the people of the two places. They have laid a solid foundation and added vibrant colors for the “Land of Abundance” and the “Pearl of the Orient” to jointly integrate into the overall national development and achieve reciprocal success.

Now, Hong Kong Week has come to Sichuan, specifically to Chengdu. I believe this event will not only strengthen exchanges and mutual learning in the fields of culture and art, but more importantly, it will enable the people of Sichuan and Hong Kong to further enhance mutual understanding, effectively expanding the horizons of friendship and mutual cooperation.

Hong Kong is rooted in Chinese traditions while embracing cultures from around the world. We believe that arts enrich life while creativity is a driver of progress in the community. With this in mind, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Goverment is dedicated to fostering and expanding diverse performance opportunities for local arts groups, with Hong Kong Week serving as one of our flagship projects. Chengdu, known as the “Land of Abundance” and Hong Kong, the “Pearl of the Orient”, complement each other with their unique strengths and both embody a cultural spirit of openness and inclusiveness. This year, Hong Kong Week 2026@Chengdu will feature about 60 dance performances, concert, drama, film and exhibitions. Many of these highlight the close artistic ties between Sichuan and Hong Kong, promising Chengdu audiences with fresh experiences and inspiring encounters with creativity.

In recent years, Hong Kong's original works have received consistent recognition from the China National Arts Fund. As many as 14 projects were selected this year, marking a five-year high. The Hong Kong Week 2026@Chengdu's opening programme, Kung Fu Artistry, presented by the Hong Kong Dance Company, was also selected last year. Another highlight is Sound River, an original composition by Tan Dun, Hong Kong's Ambassador for Cultural Promotion. The work, which earned wide acclaim during its premiere at the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Culture and Arts Festival in 2024, will be jointly performed by artists from Hong Kong and the Chinese Mainland with the Chengdu Symphony Orchestra for a refreshing new musical presentation.

Further highlights include dazzling programmes by the Hong Kong Ballet, the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, and The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, and also film screening. Audiences can also stroll through exhibitions on Hong Kong's intangible cultural heritage, original Hong Kony toys, interior design and local musicians, and join the large-scale outdoor concert ImagineLand@Chengdu at the Eastern Suburb Memory.

This year marks the inaugural year of the National 15th Five-Year Plan. Actively aligning with the national development direction, Hong Kong is promoting broader arts and cultural exchanges between the Chinese Mainland and the rest of the world, further consolidating the city's role as an East-meets-West centre for international cultural exchange.

The Hong Kong Arts Development Council (HKADC) is a multi-faceted organisation dedicated to driving the comprehensive development of the arts in Hong Kong. We are committed to nurturing local arts groups and artists, and build showcase platforms in the Chinese Mainland and overseas to help our arts “go global”. At the same time, through our “bringing in” initiatives, we gather global artistic talents in Hong Kong. This October, we will host the second edition of the Hong Kong Performing Arts Expo, where global artists, arts groups, and industry leaders will congregate to explore programme collaboration, deepen dialogue, and foster cross-regional cooperation. This will mark a significant milestone in Hong Kong's cultural development, paving the way for a more vibrant future for the arts.

This year, HKADC is deeply honoured to be invited once again by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department to participate in “Hong Kong Week 2026@Chengdu”, bringing three distinctive local performing arts productions to Chengdu audiences in various formats: No Dragon No Lion by TS Crew combines dragon and lion dances with Chinese opera, innovatively interpreting traditional Chinese culture through a contemporary performance style; Book of Mountains and Seas - The Fate of Mountains and Rivers by Théâtre de la Feuille utilises physical theatre to integrate Eastern and Western arts, exploring the mysteries of heaven, earth, humanity, and mythical beasts; and Philo 3 - Wan Xing and Master Musicians from Hong Kong brings together Hong Kong's young musicians, presenting a brand-new musical experience that transcends time and space, East and West, through an innovative crossover of the guzheng, Scottish bagpipes, beatboxing, and piano.

Through diverse media, these works offer audiences distinct and captivating artistic experiences, which we sincerely hope the Chengdu audience will enjoy.
