Philo 3 - Wan Xing and Master Musicians from Hong Kong

Wan Xing's artistic philosophy is simple and natural. As a pioneering guzheng musician, artistic curator and educator, she is passionate about cross-cultural collaboration through music. In 2025, she produced and presented Waves of Tradition - A New Horizon in Scottish and Chinese Music at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, receiving a four-star rating from The Scotsman (UK). The new work Traces II has been selected as a 2025 National Arts Fund Crossover Arts Project.

In 2024, she launched the Philo - Wan Xing and Friends Concert series, which premiered at the Hong Kong Performing Arts Expo with great success. Wan cooperated with the Hong Kong Dance Company for the original dance poem Shan Shui: An Ode to Nature, and with the Wuji Ensemble for the atmospheric music theatre Tranquil as a Chrysanthemum. Wan was chosen in 2023 to participate in the Silkroad – Global Musician Workshop project founded by Yo-Yo Ma to perform in the United States.

Graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree in Traditional Music (Piping) from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in 2019. He has been appointed an assessor of all levels for the Piping and Drumming Qualifications Board (PDQB) and SQA piping examinations since 2019. Chris has performed actively overseas with various bands including the international piping quartet Brawbeag, the 78th Highlanders Halifax Citadel Pipe Band and Bagad Cap Caval. Chris is currently a member of the ceilidh band Over the Border in Hong Kong. He is passionate about promoting Scottish bagpipe music and contributing to the growth of piping culture and education in Hong Kong.

As a three-time National Beatbox Champion in the Chinese Mainland, Heartgrey has been dedicated to beatbox and music production since 2007. In 2011, he reached the top eight at the Austrian EOM World Championship, and in 2014 and 2017, he represented Hong Kong in the Grand Beatbox Battle World Championship finals. In 2019, he participated in the reality talent TV show King Maker II, reaching the final 40, and in the same year, he founded the beatbox music group VOB. Heartgrey has also been an active music producer in recent years. His music production includes Now that she's gone, the Black Sun, Storytrails, and If I Drown, etc. In 2021, he founded the beatbox teaching brand HGBEATBOX. In 2023, he was invited to be one of the judges for the Beatbox Battle World Championship.

Fang began her music journey at the age of three. She received a full scholarship and obtained her Bachelor of Music degree at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing. She later obtained her Master of Music degree at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts as a scholarship student. As a soloist, she has participated in multiple performances at the Shenzhen Mozart Music Week organized by the Shenzhen Municipal Culture, Radio, Television, Tourism and Sports Bureau. She also received the National recognized "Golden Bell Award" Competition for the Best Piano Accompaniment in Chinese music. Over the years, she has been dedicated to piano education and has frequently served as a judge for various piano competitions.

Obtained the Bachelor Degree at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing under the tutelage of Professor Bai Yu, she later earned her Master of Music degree at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts as a scholarship student under Professor Yiu Song Lam. In 2023, she won a gold award at the 15th International Chinese Art Festival (Instrumental Ensemble); while in 2019, she was awarded the Championship in Professional Wind Ensemble category at the Thailand International Symphonic Competition. Liao is currently a full-time teacher of Guangzhou Huali College. In addition, she actively performs on stage as a soloist and chamber music player.

Graduated from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA) with a Bachelor of Music degree and a Master of Music degree. She is the first musician in Hong Kong obtaining a Master degree with a double major in zhongruan and liuqin. During her studies at the HKAPA, she received her training in ruan, liuqin and yueqin under Zhongruan maestro Lui Kwan On. She also minored in pipa under Cheung Yim Yu and sanxian under Zhao Tai sheng. At the HKAPA, she was awarded multiple scholarships. Now she is a part-time lecturer and music performer at the Music Office.

Zhang holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Ethnic Percussion from the Central Conservatory of Music and a Master of Fine Arts in Arts and Events Management from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. She has participated in the world premiere of Tan Dun's Olympic opera Tea: A Mirror of Soul at the National Centre for the Performing Arts and the Festival d'Avignon in France. Her works have won numerous awards, such as the First Prize in the Shanghai Ethnic Percussion Competition and the championship and first runner-up in the Hong Kong Dynamic Drum Challenge. She launched the Shenzhen-Hong Kong Youth Chinese Drum Troupe UNBEATABLE-X in 2024 and directed its inaugural concert. She also serves as the Executive Director of the "Greater Bay Area Guqin Art Week", a project co-funded by the National Arts Fund and the Hong Kong Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau. Proficient in applying AI technology to stage performances, she is a versatile musician possessing both a solid traditional foundation and innovative thinking.
